The leadership of the Bauchi State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has expressed satisfaction with the state government’s approval of the new national minimum wage and its commitment to commence payment in November 2024.

Addressing journalists, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Dauda Shuaibu, revealed that the agreement was reached following deliberations between a committee comprising members of the NLC and officials of the state government led by the accountant general of the state.

Comrade Shuaibu confirmed that the new minimum wage, set at ₦70,000, will be implemented for workers at both the state and local government levels.

In addition to the wage increase, the union, according to him, has submitted a proposal for a minimum pension payment of ₦32,000, which is awaiting approval.

“The governor has not opposed the pension payment but has requested more time, as the focus has been on concluding the new minimum wage agreement. We urge our senior citizens to remain patient as negotiations continue,” Shuaibu said.

Speaking on the issue of arrears, the NLC chairman clarified that it was not part of the agreement signed on November 21, 2024.

“Given the reality of the financial burden associated with the new minimum wage, arrears were not included in our discussions. I cannot guarantee the payment of arrears, as it is not captured in the agreement,” he explained.

The union leader commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his commitment to workers’ welfare, describing the wage approval as a significant milestone.

“On behalf of all workers in the state, we express our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Bala Mohammed, for his support. We assure him of our continued cooperation and commitment to advancing the state’s progress,” Shuaibu stated.
