Fernandes, who played under Amorim at Sporting, believes the young coach’s tactical brilliance and winning mentality could energize United.
Amorim, 39, officially joined United on Monday, stepping in after Erik ten Hag was sacked following a disappointing start to the season that left United in 14th place in the Premier League. Ten Hag’s departure was followed by a brief but effective stint by interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who helped United climb to 13th before stepping down.
Amorim brings an impressive record from Sporting, where he led the club to their first Primeira Liga title in nearly 20 years in 2021. His recent success, including an 11-game winning streak and a dominant 4-2 victory over Braga in his final match, highlights his potential to lead United to new heights.
“I hope he does the same here because sometimes a person can change the energy of a space if it’s the right moment,” Fernandes said in an interview with United’s media team. “We hope he can bring his energy, qualities, and knowledge of football. He’s done something really special at Sporting.”
