The Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru has decried the rising cases of fake news in the country, saying it poses great danger to the nation’s unity if the trend remains unchecked.
Gov. Nwifuru spoke when a delegation from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) paid him a visit in his office, in Abakaliki.
The governor described Ebonyi State as a unique and united state, which he is working hard to sustain the trend.
The governor’s assertion was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, by his Chief press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor and made available to newsmen.
“I thank you for coming to Ebonyi State. But I want you to know many broadcasters have gone out of the rules. Many have gone beyond interviewing people to attack their character and their privacy.
“I also want to remind you there’s a lot of fake news and about the way some broadcasters do their reports in this country.

“It is important as the regulatory body to eliminate fake news if this country must progress.
“The NBC has a responsibility to regulate how media reportage should go. Fake news should be seriously monitored. I charge the NBC to be hard on purveyors of fake news,” Gov. Nwifuru said.
While pledging to collaborate and synergize with the state government, the Director- General of NBC, Mr Charles Ebuebu, said he has signed the provisional license for the Ebonyi State Broadcasting Corporation paving the way for digital transmission.
“I also look forward to further collaboration, especially in training the youth because this is a digital era,” Ebuebu added.
Earlier, the Chairman of Glorious FM, Edward Nkwegu, pledged intentional reputation management through his radio station in the state.
Nkwegu said that “through the glorious FM Radio, we will partner to develop this state together.”
