The Ebonyi State government has ordered the arrest of several influential politicians for allegedly delivering substandard work on government projects. These prominent figures, whose names remain undisclosed, are currently in police custody following a directive from a top state commissioner.
Insiders revealed that the politicians in question were awarded contracts by the state government but failed to execute them to specification. “Some simply collected huge sums as mobilization fees and abandoned the projects. Others began work but delivered poor-quality results, far below the agreed standards,” a source disclosed.
The arrests have sent shockwaves through Ebonyi’s political circles, as the individuals involved are reportedly well-connected. “This shows that nobody is above the law, no matter how influential they are,” another witness remarked.

Despite their arrest, the contractors are reportedly plotting to retaliate by pushing for the suspension or dismissal of the commissioners responsible for their detention, viewing the move as an act of humiliation.
Governor Francis Nwifuru had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of most contractors handling state projects. Frustrated by the slow progress and subpar execution, he instructed his aides to intensify supervision of ongoing projects across Ebonyi.
The findings from these inspections have been disheartening, with many stakeholders and citizens voicing their disappointment. The governor’s initiative to promote local content and empower the people of Ebonyi, as outlined in his “Ebonyi People’s Charter of Needs,” now seems jeopardized by the poor handling of contracts.
