Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, of Borno state, has formed a technical committee to investigate the collapse of the Alau Dam.
The dam which collapsed last month, was observed to have triggered devastating floods in Maiduguri and neighboring local government areas, displacing nearly 2 million people and caused widespread property damage.
The Alau Dam, constructed between 1984 and 1986, was intended to supply water for irrigation and domestic use to Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
Its collapse has however raised concerns over the dam’s structural integrity and long-term upkeep.
In a statement released yesterday, the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, announced the formation of the committee.

The committee , according to him, will be led by Engineer Abba Garba, with the Borno State Commissioner for Water Resources as co-chair.
Other members of the committee, as announced by him, include representatives from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors, the University of Maiduguri, security agencies, and various governmental bodies.
The committee’s main task, as reeled out in the release, is to determine the causes of the dam’s failure and propose measures to prevent future incidents.
