The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has urged President Bola Tinubu to avoid further escalating the already crippling hardship faced by Nigerians. In a statement issued by the YCE’s General Secretary, Oladipo Oyewole, the elders expressed their deep concerns over the nation’s growing crisis and called for immediate action to alleviate the suffering.

The statement stressed that “Nigeria is in dire straits, with widespread suffering. The YCE remains hopeful for a brighter future, but the current hardship, exacerbated by scarce information on government policies, is deeply troubling.”

The Yoruba Elders are pressing for urgent measures to ease the burden on the masses, particularly with the recent increase in the price of petroleum products (PMS) and the unreliable electricity supply, which have plunged many Nigerians into even greater distress.

“We believe that the government must focus on improving the quality of life for all Nigerians. Mere palliatives won’t suffice — real, sustainable changes are needed to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of the people,” Oyewole said.

Highlighting the dire situation, the YCE warned that many Nigerians are grappling with a lack of fuel, electricity, and food, calling it a “bitter pill” that the country is being forced to swallow.

The statement continued, “President Tinubu must revisit his strategies and address the immediate needs of Nigerians while still working towards long-term solutions for national growth and development. Our people deserve better.”

The Yoruba Elders Council urged the government to act swiftly, stating that the administration must step up its efforts to deliver on its promises of good governance. They believe that without immediate intervention, the hardships will continue to mount, leading to further frustration and unrest.

“The government has a duty to ensure that all Nigerians, irrespective of their status, can live in comfort and dignity. The suffering is too much, and the time for action is now,” the statement concluded.

As Nigerians wait for relief, the message from the Yoruba Elders is clear: “The time for action is now – enough of the suffering!”
