President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The ceremony took place on Friday at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the history of Nigeria as Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second woman in the nation’s history to hold this esteemed position.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun takes the mantle of leadership as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria. Her appointment is seen as a beacon of hope and inspiration, particularly for young women across the nation who aspire to break through barriers in various sectors.
President Tinubu, in his remarks during the swearing-in ceremony, underscored the critical role of the judiciary in maintaining social order, peace, and security in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s independence and urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to defend this principle vigorously.
“The position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities,” President Tinubu noted. “It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance, sobriety, and the highest level of integrity. The Supreme Court’s judgments are final, and thus, it is imperative that the Chief Justice remains faithful to the Constitution and the cause of justice.”
The President also called on Justice Kekere-Ekun to strengthen mechanisms that promote integrity, discipline, and transparency within the judiciary. He lauded her impeccable career, which saw her rise from a magistrate to a Supreme Court justice, describing her as a “trailblazer” and “brilliant lawyer.”

President Tinubu highlighted recent efforts by his administration to enhance the judiciary’s capacity and welfare. He pointed to the passage of the Judicial Autonomy Act of 2024, which increased judicial officers’ remuneration by 300%, and the appointment of 11 new justices to the Supreme Court in December 2023. These actions, according to the President, are part of broader reforms aimed at ensuring the judiciary functions efficiently and independently.
“The judiciary under this administration will continue to receive prompt and adequate attention,” President Tinubu assured, emphasizing its role as a driver of social order, the rule of law, and economic development.
In her first remarks as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kekere-Ekun pledged to elevate the judiciary to new heights, improve its reputation, and restore public confidence in the judicial system. She acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism about achieving significant improvements.
“A better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation. If we want to see a better society, let the improvement start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice.”Justice Kekere-Ekun stated.
She also emphasized the importance of the judicial appointment process and discipline within the legal profession, promising to address these concerns during her tenure.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, justices of the Supreme Court, senior judicial officers, and members of the Federal Executive Council. The acting Chief Justice’s family, led by her spouse, Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun, was also present to witness this momentous occasion.
