Efforts by the Taraba state government to reduce the burden of Human Immunodeficiency Viruses (HIV), has no doubt continued to yield results.

This was observed yesterday when a committee assigned with the responsibility of ensuring drastic reductions of the prevalence of HIV to 0.1 per cent in the state, was inaugurated.

The committee which is headed by the Commissioner of Health, Dr Innocent Vakkai, was noticed to have been charged with the responsibility of working tirelessly round the clock to reduce the prevalence of HIV in the state from 2.9% to 0.1%.

Known as the Taraba State ART Programme Management Team (TEPMT), the committee was observed to have been inaugurated in Jalingo by the Commissioner, who doubles as the chairman.

Apart from halting the missing and pilfering of Antiretroviral drugs meant for persons living with HIV in the state, the committee, as stated by the chairman, has as well been mandated to meet quarterly to get updates on achievements, challenges facing the project and to provide guidance and solutions.

The committee, who our correspondent noticed to have as well been shouldered with the responsibility of procuring, distributing and monitoring the ARTs, according to him, is to efficiently distribute the commodity to health facilities spread across the state.

They were also noticed to have been directed to take issues relating to the welfare of persons living with HIV in the state seriously.

Pledging the state government’s unflinching support for the twenty-three-man committee, he urged the members to leave no stone unturned while working round the clock to insert the right peg in the right hole.

On his part, the Director General, Taraba State Aids Control Agency (TACA), Dr Garba Danjuma, who is also a member of the committee, lauded the efforts of the leadership of the Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE) in Nigeria, whom according to him, made the formation possible.

A media team, known as Taraba State HIV/AIDS Media Advocacy Team (THAMAT), assigned with the responsibility of disseminating accurate information and creating awareness in a bid to sensitise people against HIV, it would be recalled, was in June this year inaugurated.
