Harvard-trained business mogul and 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Delta South Senatorial District, Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has congratulated Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse 111, on his first coronation anniversary.

He described the king as a paramount traditional ruler who ascended the throne as a self-made business mogul and serial entrepreneur with a visionary mindset.

“You ascended to the throne with purposeful leadership trust and profound integrity and promoted peace among other ethnic groups in Warri, Delta State,” he said in a statement.

“You have been playing all-inclusiveness in your traditional leadership system without attaching any ethnic sentiment to it. Watching your recent economic summit held in your Palace, I saw how you displayed traditional intelligence in the presence of corporate and business players in attendance.

“One year on the throne, your leadership disposition has been impactful and creative in terms of cultural and socio-economic promotion in Delta State and abroad. You are a detribalized monarch who sees everybody equally irrespective of the region or political party anyone belongs to.”

He commended him for using his traditional position to keep uniting all ethnic groups in Delta State.

He added: “You have exhibited your leadership dexterity that leaders are born from the womb and made on earth. On behalf of myself, my family, the JOT Campaign Organisation, and my amiable supporters, I pray God will continue to give you the wisdom to take fruitful decisions to make the throne the most enviable one in Nigeria.

You have always been a listening traditional leader with the capacity and you will continue to excel in all your endeavors.”. Meanwhile, backing for Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (JOT), has further received a boost as a coalition of groups with slogan, “Strong Runner, Good Candidate,” declared support towards the actualization of his ambition come 2023 election.

Rising from a meeting of the group held at Agbarha Kingdom, in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, representatives of different groups, artisans, civil servants, and craftsmen, said they gathered to endorse the candidature of Hon. Joel Onowakpo – Thomas as the Delta South senatorial candidate.

The group submitted that after a careful look at all the senatorial candidates in the forthcoming elections, it have decided to identify with (JOT), who they have seen as the most credible, and qualified candidate. According to the Spokesman of the group, Comrade Miracle Amatesiro, “we are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Hon. Joel-Onowakpo will deliver on the mandate. Hence we have decided to pitch tent with him.

“Yes, we decided to endorse him because he is a good man, very educated and intelligent. You could recall when the former governor, His Excellency, Emmanuel Uduaghan, made him the Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue (DBIR), he was able to touch lives. He built offices across the twenty five local government areas for the board.”

He noted that, “You saw what happened at the last Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) primaries. The people who emerged as candidates of the party were those who paid money to see themselves through. As a pressure group, we looked at that and decided to support a man we know will deliver.”

He opined that, “Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas is a listening man. He was able to empower the youths when he was Board Chairman. Even those not from his constituency were touched. We are convinced that he will work beyond his Senatorial District if given the mandate.”

Meanwhile, Prince Andy Egunoma, aide of Hon. Joel Onowakpo Thomas, brought goodwill messages from the business guru. He urged the group to make sure they all have their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) ready, as that is the only way they can walk the talk of their slogan ‘Strong Runner, Good Candidate.’

He also assured them of working together during and after the electioneering period, to ensure good governance. The former member, APC Presidential Campaign For President Buhari, also assured them that his Principal, Hon. Joel Onowakpo Thomas, will not relent in his good deeds that have brought him this recognition by the group.

Present at the gathering were Mr. Sotu Godbless Oghenevwede, Comrade Meshack Akarota and Amanluoge Peter among others.

Nigeria can’t rely on borrowing forever, Finance Minister warns over fresh World Bank loan plans

May 12, 2026
Nigeria can’t rely on borrowing forever, Finance Minister warns over fresh World Bank loan plans By Paul Joseph Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has declared that the country can no longer depend heavily on borrowing to fund national development, insisting that stronger tax reforms and sustainable revenue generation are now critical to the nation’s future. Speaking at the 28th Annual Tax Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria in Abuja, Oyedele said Nigeria must build a resilient fiscal system capable of financing infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and social welfare without excessive reliance on debt. His remarks come amid reports that the Federal Government is seeking a fresh $1.25 billion loan from the World Bank to support economic reforms and job creation initiatives. According to the minister, the government’s ongoing tax reforms are designed to improve fiscal sustainability, attract investment, reduce inequality and stimulate long-term economic growth. Oyedele noted that Nigeria’s tax system has for years been weakened by multiple taxation, poor compliance, fragmented administration and overdependence on a narrow revenue base, making it difficult for government revenues to adequately support development needs. He explained that the proposed reforms aim to simplify taxation, improve fairness and reduce the burden on low- and middle-income earners while creating a more investor-friendly environment. The minister disclosed that minimum wage earners have now been exempted from personal income tax, while plans are underway to reduce company income tax rates in order to encourage business expansion and investment. He added that reforms to the Value Added Tax system are expected to lower operational costs, improve efficiency and help moderate inflationary pressures across the economy. Oyedele further revealed that at least 15 states have already adopted tax harmonisation laws aimed at reducing multiple taxation and easing compliance burdens on businesses operating across the country. Also speaking at the conference, Vice-President Kashim Shettima defended the reforms, describing them as pro-people and pro-business measures intended to strengthen the economy and lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty. Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, also backed the reforms, arguing that wealthy Nigerians and private jet owners should contribute more through taxation to support national development.
