Edo State Polytechnic through the Greg Ogbeifun Institute of Maritime Technology (GOMIT) has partnered with the Training Centre for Blue Collar Port Workers in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation on the training of manpower for Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Abiodun Falodun, in a chat with journalists, said the collaboration will ensure that the polytechnic trains world-class seafarers, dockworkers and other personnel required for a robust maritime sector in Nigeria.

He added that with the support of international partners, certificates and diplomas issued from GOMIT will be recognized globally, which is necessary for international maritime operations.

According to him, “The Greg Ogbeifun Institute of Maritime Technology is a novel institute set up as an avenue to train professionals in the maritime sector. The visioner, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun is a respected professional with a proven track record in the industry. He domiciled the institute in Edo State Polytechnic to bridge the manpower gap in the sector and train personnel that will provide gainful employment to youths.

“As a result, we have a seamless collaboration and partnership with the Training Centre for Blue Collar Port Workers in the Port of Antwerp Belgium, and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.”

Prof. Falodun noted that the state government had given a charge for state-owned institutions of higher learning to prioritise the training of youths for in-demand skills, which is why the polytechnic has created the institute to train maritime workers.
