Inhabitants in Irese, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State have protested against the five months of blackout and insecurity in the community.
The community residents, who are primarily youths, in their large numbers with wood, benches, and tables, obstructed the major road for hours, which led to the closing shutting down of commercial activities. During the protest, vehicles and motorcycles were prevented from entering and leaving the town.
The residents, who lamented that the community had remained in utter darkness, criticized the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, for the power outage.
Ifeoluwa Ola, a resident of the community, said the darkness that had descended on the area had heightened the sense of insecurity, requiring the protest.

Funmilayo Adesewa, a resident and artisan, clarified that the community’s businesses, especially artisans, had suffered due to the five-month power outage.
Reacting, the spokesman for the BEDC’s Akure Branch, Mr Micheal Barnabas, said there were power outages due to the community transformers that had been destroyed by vandals who stole some oil. He said that the problem would be resolved shortly.
