Obi condemns reported attacks in Delta

Obi said political violence, intimidation and destruction of property have no place in a democratic society. He urged political actors to resolve disagreements through peaceful and lawful means.

He also expressed concern about attempts to gain political influence through fear and violence rather than persuasion and public support. According to Obi, political authority should come from the confidence of voters, not from intimidating opponents or preventing other groups from participating in the democratic process.

“I unequivocally condemn the attacks against our coordinators, supporters, and fellow citizens who were merely exercising their democratic rights.

“Political violence has no place in a democracy and can never be justified. No political aspiration is worth the life of a Nigerian, and no dispute should be resolved through intimidation, physical attacks, or the destruction of property,” Obi said.

Obi calls for investigation and protection

The NDC presidential candidate urged the Delta State Government and relevant security agencies to conduct an immediate investigation and ensure anyone found responsible faces the consequences of the law.

He called on security authorities to protect NDC members, Obidient Movement coordinators and other residents. Obi said no political party or individual should use violence to restrict opponents’ activities or undermine citizens’ rights.

He reaffirmed that the NDC would not be intimidated from exercising its democratic rights and said the party remained committed to peaceful political engagement.

NDC says it will continue peaceful political participation

Obi said every Nigerian has the right to organise, assemble, express political opinions and participate in elections without fear of harassment or intimidation. He said the democratic space belongs to all Nigerians.

“No political party or individual has exclusive ownership of the democratic space. Every Nigerian is entitled to organise, gather, express their views, and freely elect their leaders,” he added.

He expressed solidarity with those affected by the reported attacks, saying Nigeria’s future should be built on justice, liberty, peace and respect for the dignity of every citizen.

Obi’s statement did not identify those responsible for the reported incidents. The circumstances and any responsibility for the attacks remain matters for investigation.

The development comes amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections and renewed calls for security agencies to protect citizens’ right to participate freely in the democratic process.
