The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions to verify the approved UTME and O’Level subject combinations for their preferred courses to avoid being disqualified during the admission process.

The examination body warned that candidates could lose admission opportunities despite good Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores and satisfactory O’Level results if their subject combinations do not meet the requirements of their chosen institutions and programmes.
Key Highlights
- JAMB advises candidates to verify approved UTME and O’Level subject combinations.
- Candidates can check admission requirements through the official IBASS portal.
- Requirements differ across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
- Incorrect subject combinations may affect candidates’ admission eligibility despite good scores.
- JAMB has provided a step-by-step guide for checking approved requirements.
In an advisory published on its JAMB Explained platform on X on Friday, November 6, 2026, the board directed candidates to use its Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS) portal to check requirements for their preferred institutions and courses.
“Do you know that your subject combination might be the reason you don’t get admitted? You can have good scores in the UTME and O-Level results and still not be eligible for admission,” JAMB stated.
The board explained that admission requirements vary across institutions and academic programmes. It urged candidates to confirm the conditions for their course before selecting it or changing their programme of study.
How to Check JAMB Approved Subject Combinations
Candidates can use the official JAMB IBASS portal to verify their subject combinations. JAMB’s guide sets out these steps:
- Visit ibass.jamb.gov.ng.
- Select the brochure section on the portal.
- Choose the option to view all institutions.
- Use the institution filter to find your preferred university, polytechnic or college of education.
- Select the institution.
- Choose the course or programme you intend to study.
- Click “View Details” to access the admission requirements.
The information displayed includes the approved O’Level subject requirements and the UTME subject combination for the selected programme.
Candidates should check that their O’Level subjects and grades meet the stated conditions and that their UTME subject combination matches the requirements for their institution and course.
JAMB Warns Candidates Against Incorrect Subject Combinations
The board said checking admission requirements before making admission choices can help candidates avoid mistakes that affect their eligibility. A strong UTME score or satisfactory O’Level results alone do not make a candidate eligible if the required subjects are missing.
The advisory applies to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Requirements may vary by institution and programme, so candidates should use the IBASS entry for their own course rather than assume one combination applies everywhere.
