Kwara Government Engages FrieslandCampina WAMCO on Livestock Investment

Commissioner for Livestock Development Oloruntoyosi Thomas disclosed the engagement after meeting with representatives of FrieslandCampina WAMCO, a major company in Nigeria’s dairy and food industry.

Thomas said the meeting allowed both sides to explore possible collaboration in livestock production and agricultural development, including ways to improve local output and attract private investment.

She said partnerships with established industry players could expose livestock farmers to modern agricultural practices, improve productivity and strengthen their participation in the dairy value chain. Such collaboration could also support small and medium-scale enterprises, create jobs and improve incomes through stronger connections with private-sector operators.

“One of the key areas of interest was the potential for stronger collaboration with local farmers and other stakeholders in the livestock sector,” Thomas said.

Government Targets Improved Farmers’ Productivity and Livelihoods

Thomas stressed that local farmers and other stakeholders should be involved in agricultural investment initiatives so communities can benefit. She said government efforts alone cannot drive sustained economic growth without private-sector investment, technical expertise and innovation.

“As a government, we recognise that meaningful economic growth cannot be achieved by government efforts alone. It requires deliberate partnerships with credible private-sector organisations that share our vision for development,” she said.

The discussions also covered ways to address challenges in the agricultural sector and create an environment where businesses can operate and expand their investments in Kwara State.

Kwara Identifies Livestock Sector as Economic Growth Opportunity

The commissioner described Kwara as having significant potential in livestock production and agriculture. She said suitable policies, investment and strategic partnerships could strengthen the state’s productive capacity.

Thomas expressed optimism that engagement with FrieslandCampina WAMCO could create opportunities for the livestock sector and contribute to economic development, while noting that further discussions were needed to turn the engagement into specific areas of collaboration.

“Our commitment remains clear: to build a stronger livestock sector, empower our farmers, attract meaningful investment and create a more prosperous Kwara State for all,” Thomas said.

The proposed partnership is part of the state’s efforts to encourage private-sector participation in agriculture, strengthen local production and improve economic opportunities for livestock farmers.
