The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has distanced itself from recent statements allegedly credited to the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Onwuasoanya Jones, who claimed that the NDC is holding coalition talks with the APC in the state.
Key Highlights
- Imo NDC denies holding coalition talks with the APC or any other party.
- Party spokesperson Cyriacus Nwagwu challenges APC spokesperson Onwuasoanya Jones to provide evidence or retract.
- NDC dismisses claim that 80 percent of Imo electorate are in the alleged talks.
- The party plans a political engagement in Owerri on October 31, 2026.
- NDC threatens legal action over further false claims.
The party, in a press statement issued on Thursday through its spokesperson, Cyriacus Nwagwu, debunked the information and described it as a figment of the purported originator’s imagination.
The NDC, in the press release, stated clearly that the party is not in any coalition talks with any political party, including the APC.
“For the avoidance of doubt, NDC Imo State chapter has never authorised any coalition discussion with APC. We challenge Onwuasoanya Jones to substantiate his claim with credible evidence or retract it.
“NDC remains committed to its mission of rescuing Nigeria and providing credible leadership.
“Our anticipated political engagement in Owerri on October 31, 2026 underscores our determination to strengthen our movement and mobilise Nigerians for meaningful change,” the release stated.
NDC Rejects 80 Percent Claim
The party also asserted that the claim made by the APC spokesperson that 80 percent of the Imo electorate, including members of the NDC, are in the alleged coalition discussions is presumptuous, misleading and unsupported by verifiable evidence.
The NDC leadership in the state advised the APC to focus on addressing the concerns of Imo people over insecurity, economic hardship and governance rather than making sweeping electoral claims.
It maintained that electoral victory is earned through public trust, not manufactured through political propaganda.

Party Threatens Legal Action
“We warn APC against dragging NDC into unsubstantiated political narratives. Any further demonstrably false claims that damage our party’s reputation will be addressed through appropriate legal channels.
“Our position is clear: the NDC will not be intimidated, misrepresented or distracted by political theatrics.
“Our loyalty is to the people, our mission is national transformation, and our focus remains firmly on the future,” the release added.
