He explained that his ranking was based on musical achievements, including songwriting, production and the quality and depth of an artiste’s catalogue, rather than personal controversies or legal troubles.
According to Tyrese, Kelly’s influence extends beyond his own recordings, citing his contributions to other artistes’ careers through songwriting and production.

Chris Brown, Usher In The Debate
His comments have reignited debate among music fans over who deserves to be recognised as the genre’s leading male artiste, with Chris Brown and Usher also prominent contenders in the conversation.
Brown’s supporters point to his extensive catalogue, longevity and performance abilities, while Usher is celebrated for his vocal talent, commercial success and influence on contemporary R&B.
Tyrese, however, placed Kelly above both artistes, arguing that his songwriting, production expertise and body of work give him an edge in the debate.
The ranking has once again raised questions about whether an artiste’s musical achievements can be separated from personal conduct, particularly when serious criminal convictions form part of their public legacy.
For Tyrese, however, R. Kelly remains his clear choice for the King of R&B, despite the controversy surrounding the singer’s life and career.
