Nigerian singer Mayorkun has revealed how uncertainty over his music career pushed him to seek spiritual support after Afrobeats star Davido stopped responding to his messages for two weeks.
Key Highlights
- Mayorkun says Davido went silent for two weeks after he quit his banking job.
- The singer started attending church while waiting to hear from Davido.
- Davido texted him to move into his house right after he led praise and worship.
- He went on to sign with DMW and release hits like Eleko, Mama and Sade.
Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, said the period was particularly difficult because he had already resigned from his banking job after Davido expressed interest in signing him.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, the singer explained that Davido had discovered him through a video of him singing online and subsequently indicated interest in working with him.
However, after the initial contact, Davido allegedly stopped communicating with him, leaving him worried about whether the proposed record deal would materialise.
According to Mayorkun, he became increasingly anxious because he had already taken a major risk by leaving his job to pursue a career in music.
‘It Was More Than a Testimony’
He said the uncertainty led him to start attending church, hoping for divine intervention while waiting to hear from the singer.
Mayorkun recalled that a turning point came on a day he led a praise and worship session at church. Shortly after the session, Davido sent him a WhatsApp message asking him to pack his belongings and move into his house.
Recounting the experience, Mayorkun said, “Davido stopped replying to me for two weeks after I quit my banking job. I started going to church, and one day, immediately after singing praise and worship, he texted me on WhatsApp to pack my luggage and come to his house. It was more than a testimony.”
The singer added that he had not even returned to his seat after leading the worship session when the message arrived.
He said, “Before then, I was in panic because I wasn’t sure whether Davido would talk to me again.”

His account offers a glimpse into the uncertainty he faced before his breakthrough, particularly the risk of leaving a stable job for an opportunity in the highly competitive music industry.
