MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has attributed the power outage affecting parts of New Haven in Enugu metropolis to a vehicular accident that caused four high-tension electricity poles to collapse along Chime Avenue, disrupting electricity supply to several residential areas and businesses.

Key Highlights

  • MainPower attributes the New Haven power outage in Enugu to a vehicular accident.
  • Four high-tension electricity poles reportedly collapsed near Akalaka House on Chime Avenue.
  • The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
  • The damage affected the Chime Avenue 11kV feeder and several transformers.
  • Homes, businesses, restaurants, a hospital and telecommunications facilities are among the reported affected locations.
  • MainPower says its technical team is working to restore electricity by the end of Tuesday, October 13.
  • The company has apologised to affected customers and appealed for patience.

MainPower Explains Cause of New Haven Power Outage

The Head of Communications at MEDL, Mr Emeka Ezeh, disclosed the cause of the outage in a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ezeh explained that the accident occurred near Akalaka House on Chime Avenue around midnight on Sunday, October 11, resulting in the collapse of four high-tension electricity poles.

According to him, the damage affected the Chime Avenue 11kV feeder, disrupting electricity supply to customers served by several transformers across New Haven and adjoining areas.

The affected locations include Mbanefo 1 and 2, Nwokocha, Lumumber 1 and 2, Nzimiro, Bassey Duke, Udenweze, St. Rest and Akalaka House.

Businesses, Restaurants and Other Facilities Affected

MainPower also listed several commercial establishments and other facilities among those affected by the disruption.

They include First Bank, Neo Court Hotel, MTN Neo Court, MTN Nnaji Park, Discovery Plaza, Gabby Estate, Discovery Suite, Food Concept, Ntachi Osa, Livingston Hospital and Tastia Restaurant.

New Haven Extension was also listed among the affected areas.

The disruption is expected to inconvenience residents and businesses that depend on a stable electricity supply for household activities, commercial operations and essential services.

However, the company did not provide a breakdown of the number of customers affected by the incident.

MainPower Begins Repairs, Targets Electricity Restoration

Ezeh said MEDL’s technical team was working to clear the fault and restore electricity to the affected areas.

“Our technical team is working hard to clear the fault and restore electricity supply to the affected areas by end of today,” he said.

The company therefore set Tuesday, October 13, as its target for restoring supply, although the actual restoration time will depend on the progress of the repair work.

MEDL apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage and appealed for their patience and understanding while repairs continue.

Residents and businesses in the affected parts of New Haven will be looking to the company to complete repairs and restore supply as scheduled.
