A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Adamawa State, Josiah Shickwi, has donated desks, solar-powered streetlights and learning materials to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Shagari Phase 1, in Yola South Local Government Area.

The donation, made on October 9, 2026, under her Comfort to Learn Project, is aimed at improving students’ learning conditions and providing a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The intervention, executed as Shickwi’s Community Development Service project, comprises 50 desks, 10 solar-powered streetlights, 10 whiteboards, 50 exercise books, 10 dusters and 10 whiteboard markers.
‘Every Child Deserves A Comfortable Environment’
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the corps member, with State Code AD/25C/2631, said she initiated the project after observing the difficulties students faced due to inadequate furniture, poor lighting and insufficient learning materials.
She explained that the initiative is designed to address some of the challenges confronting the school and give students a more comfortable environment to pursue their education.
“I saw students trying to learn under difficult conditions, and I asked myself what I could do to make their school experience better.
“This project may not solve every challenge, but it is a meaningful step. Every child deserves a comfortable and supportive environment in which to learn,” she said.
NYSC, ADSUBEB Commend Initiative
Commissioning the project on behalf of the NYSC Adamawa State Coordinator, Mrs. Osoroh Chinedu, the State Zonal Inspector, Mr. Chinedu Alex, commended Shickwi for identifying a community need and providing practical support to address it.
He urged the school management and students to protect and maintain the donated facilities to ensure they serve their intended purpose for years to come.
Similarly, Mr. Kurdah Kurdah, who represented the acting Director of the Physical Planning Department of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), Mr. Dalhatu Abba, praised the initiative, describing it as an example of how individual commitment can contribute to educational development.

The school principal, Mrs. Charity Peter, described the donation as timely, noting that the facilities would improve students’ comfort and support effective teaching and learning.
She encouraged the students to use the items responsibly, maintain discipline and remain committed to their studies.
The students expressed excitement over the intervention and pledged to safeguard the donated facilities.
Shickwi expressed appreciation to the organisations and individuals whose contributions supported the successful execution of the Comfort to Learn Project.
They included the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), Adamawa State Office; the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB); the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Adamawa State Wing; and Muhammad Umar.
She said their support represents an investment in the future of young learners by helping to improve their learning conditions and restore dignity to the educational environment.
