Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has escaped an immediate suspension after an independent Football Association (FA) regulatory commission handed him a suspended six-week ban and £28,000 fine over his involvement in the club’s spying scandal.

Key Highlights

  • Southampton manager Tonda Eckert received a suspended six-week ban over the spying scandal.
  • Eckert was also fined £28,000 and reprimanded for three breaches of FA Rule E3.1.
  • The suspension has been placed on hold until the end of next season.
  • The FA had sought a three-month ban but the commission reduced the sanction after considering mitigating factors.
  • Southampton welcomed the decision, while owner Dragan Solak backed Eckert.
  • The scandal previously resulted in Southampton being expelled from the Championship play-offs and deducted four points.

Eckert Escapes Immediate Southampton Touchline Ban

The independent FA regulatory commission found Eckert guilty of three breaches of FA Rule E3.1 but decided against imposing an immediate six-week suspension.

Instead, the ban has been suspended until the end of next season, meaning Eckert can continue managing Southampton unless another qualifying offence triggers the sanction.

The commission also issued a reprimand and imposed a £28,000 fine.

The FA had initially requested a three-month suspension, but the commission said it had taken into account considerable mitigation, particularly Eckert’s remorse over the incident.

The FA has not yet confirmed whether it will appeal the decision.

Southampton Welcomes FA Decision

Southampton welcomed the ruling and expressed hope that it would bring an end to what the club described as a regrettable period in its history.

Club owner Dragan Solak also backed Eckert, saying Southampton had “already suffered enough” and expressing confidence that the manager had learned from the controversy.

The ruling allows Eckert to remain in charge without an immediate suspension affecting Southampton’s current Championship campaign.

What Happened in Southampton’s Spying Scandal?

The controversy began after Southampton admitted to spying on training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before the club’s Championship play-off campaign last season.

The scandal resulted in Southampton being expelled from the Championship play-offs and receiving a four-point deduction for the current season.

An independent EFL disciplinary commission previously ruled that the spying operation had been authorised by Eckert and described it as a “contrived and determined plan from the top down” designed to gain a competitive advantage.

Eckert Apologised Over Spying Incident

Eckert, 33, apologised publicly in June, saying he had not known that the practice was prohibited.

The Southampton manager also maintained that the spying had not influenced the club’s performances.

The latest FA ruling examined several incidents linked to the investigation.

According to the commission, Eckert had arranged for someone to spy on Oxford United to determine whether the club would use a back four or back five under its new manager.

In the case of Middlesbrough, someone was sent to establish whether midfielder Hayden Hackney was fit to play.

FA Panel Clears Eckert Over Ipswich CCTV Operation

The commission found that Eckert did not initiate the attempt to obtain CCTV footage of Ipswich Town’s training session.

The panel also concluded that Eckert was unaware at the time that the conduct breached EFL regulations or that it was morally wrong.

The commission described him as an impressive witness who had reflected deeply on the incident and demonstrated a significant level of contrition.

His remorse and other mitigating circumstances contributed to the decision to suspend rather than immediately activate the six-week ban.

Eckert’s Ban Could Be Triggered by Another Incident

Under the FA ruling, Eckert’s six-week suspension from all football activity will only take effect if he becomes involved in another spying-related incident before the end of next season.

This means the Southampton manager remains available to lead the club during the current campaign, subject to the conditions of the ruling.

The decision brings some immediate stability to Southampton as the club continues its Championship campaign.

Southampton’s Championship Campaign Continues

Eckert became Southampton’s permanent manager in December 2025, after initially taking interim charge when the club was 21st in the Championship.

He subsequently guided the Saints to fourth place.

Southampton are currently 13th in the Championship after winning four of their opening eight matches.

The Saints are scheduled to face local rivals Portsmouth this weekend as they continue their campaign under Eckert.
