Presidency Confirms Tinubu Returns to Abuja
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced on Monday that Tinubu would depart Lagos for Abuja after his six-day visit to the former seat of government.
The announcement came as videos of the President’s departure began circulating on social media, including X.
As of the time of the announcement, the Presidency had confirmed his departure plans but had not yet announced his arrival in Abuja.
Tinubu Arrived in Lagos After Extended European Vacation
Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29, following his working vacation in Europe.
The President had departed Abuja on August 30 and initially travelled to London before proceeding to Paris, France. The Presidency later announced that he had extended his stay by several days.
Upon arriving at the presidential wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Tinubu dismissed concerns about his health.
The President told journalists that he was “healthy, sound, and ready to go,” while describing health rumours as part of political discourse.
He was received in Lagos by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other senior political figures.
Tinubu’s Lagos Visit Focused on MKO Abiola’s Legacy
The Presidency said Tinubu chose Lagos as his first stop after returning from Europe partly to honour the memory of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The President participated in activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1 and attended the premiere of a documentary on Abiola, the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election and the pro-democracy struggle that followed.
The documentary premiere was part of activities designed to highlight Abiola’s place in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Tinubu Meets Political Associates Ahead of 2027
Before his arrival in Lagos, the Presidency said Tinubu would use the visit to hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meetings were expected to form part of ongoing political consultations as parties and political actors begin preparations for the next general elections.
Tinubu’s return to Abuja therefore comes as political activity surrounding the 2027 elections continues to intensify.
President Visits Oba of Lagos
On Sunday, Tinubu paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu, at the Iga Idunganran Palace on Lagos Island.
