The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected The Economist’s forecast that President Bola Tinubu could win re-election in 2027 despite widespread public dissatisfaction, arguing that economic hardship and the cost-of-living crisis may weigh more heavily on voters than religion, ethnicity, incumbency or opposition fragmentation.

The debate followed an October 1 article by The Economist titled “Nigerians Dislike Their President, But May Re-elect Him Anyway.” The presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to INEC’s election calendar.

Key Highlights

  • The ADC has challenged The Economist’s forecast that Tinubu could win re-election despite public dissatisfaction.
  • ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi questioned the assumptions behind the magazine’s analysis.
  • Abdullahi said the cost-of-living crisis may shape voters’ choices more than religion or ethnicity.
  • Campaign spokesman Phrank Shaibu said a forecast cannot determine how Nigerians will vote.
  • Shaibu argued that voters judge the economy by household realities, not only headline figures.
  • INEC has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.

The Economist’s Tinubu 2027 Forecast

The Economist’s October 1 analysis argued that Tinubu’s prospects may depend less on public satisfaction and more on Nigeria’s electoral dynamics.

The magazine identified incumbency, access to ruling-party structures, opposition fragmentation, religious and regional considerations, and voter turnout as factors that could influence the outcome.

It also examined Nigeria’s security challenges and economic difficulties, arguing that dissatisfaction with the administration may not automatically translate into an electoral defeat for the incumbent. One of its central points was that a divided opposition could struggle to consolidate votes against the APC.

ADC Rejects Economist’s Tinubu Election Projection

Reacting to the report, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party agreed that Tinubu faced widespread dissatisfaction but rejected the conclusion that the president could nevertheless win.

“We think the story is based on assumptions that are not necessarily correct,” Abdullahi said, according to reports.

He argued that religion and ethnicity had been given too much weight in assessing the 2027 contest, while the cost-of-living crisis could prove more important in determining how Nigerians vote.

Abdullahi said Nigerians across religious, ethnic and regional backgrounds were experiencing economic pressure and could make decisions based on their everyday circumstances.

“A Forecast Is Not a Verdict” — Phrank Shaibu

The ADC Presidential Campaign Council also challenged the projection in a response by its Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu. In a piece titled “No forecast can overrule the people: Nigerians will vote out Tinubu and elect Atiku,” Shaibu argued that incumbency, political machinery, religion and voter turnout may influence an election but cannot determine its result.

“These factors matter. But they are not the same as public consent, and none can tell us how Nigerians will vote in January. A forecast is not a verdict,” Shaibu wrote.

Shaibu said voters would assess the economy through their personal experiences, including what their income could buy, what they had been forced to sacrifice and whether they could provide for their families.

ADC Challenges Low-Turnout Argument

Shaibu also disputed the suggestion that low voter turnout could benefit the incumbent. He argued that low participation in the 2023 election could be linked to voter apathy, insecurity, distrust in the electoral process and logistical difficulties.

According to Shaibu, winning an election does not necessarily mean a candidate received the support of most registered voters. The argument has become part of the wider debate over whether turnout, opposition unity and electoral organisation could determine the 2027 presidential contest.

Opposition Pushback Against Tinubu 2027 Forecast

The ADC’s response comes amid wider opposition criticism of The Economist’s forecast. The Nigeria Democratic Congress has also questioned the magazine’s conclusion, arguing that Tinubu’s reported unpopularity could make re-election difficult.

The Presidency, however, has defended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has maintained that the reforms were intended to address longstanding economic distortions and difficult decisions postponed by previous administrations.

What the Forecast Means for the Election

With the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, the debate is shifting from whether Tinubu is popular to whether dissatisfaction with his administration will translate into votes against him.

The Economist argues that unpopularity alone may not be sufficient to defeat an incumbent in Nigeria’s electoral environment. The ADC maintains that economic hardship, the cost of living and voters’ personal experiences could override the political, religious and regional factors highlighted by the magazine.

Ultimately, the 2027 election will be decided by Nigerian voters at the ballot box, rather than by any forecast or political prediction. Follow us on X for more updates.
