A N1 Pretoria robbery warning has been issued to motorists travelling north of Pretoria after crime correspondent Yusuf Abramjee shared dashcam footage reportedly showing a driver being robbed after stopping along the highway near the Carousel Toll Plaza.
Abramjee shared the night-vision footage on October 4, 2026, saying it was recorded by a Cartrack system at about 10:25 p.m. on October 2. The footage shows activity inside a vehicle stopped along the N1, while location data visible in the recording places the incident along the N1 corridor north of Pretoria, in the direction of Maubane.

Abramjee Shares N1 Robbery Footage
The latest warning followed a post by crime correspondent Yusuf Abramjee, who shared several minutes of night-vision footage recorded by a vehicle-tracking system.
According to Abramjee’s account, the driver had stopped along the N1 and was subsequently robbed.
The footage reportedly contains coordinates that place the vehicle along the N1 corridor north of Pretoria, consistent with the stretch beyond the Carousel Toll Plaza towards the Maubane area.
The video quickly attracted attention online, prompting renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution when travelling on the route after dark.
Motorists Warned Against Stopping on N1
Abramjee urged motorists to avoid stopping on isolated sections of the N1, particularly at night.
Drivers who need to take a break, attend to a vehicle problem or use restroom facilities are advised to move to a petrol station, rest area or another secure and well-lit location where possible.
Motorists are also encouraged to remain alert, keep their vehicles secured and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
Previous N1 Robbery Near Carousel Toll Plaza
The latest footage comes amid a history of serious roadside crime on the N1 north of Pretoria.
In January 2025, two people were shot dead during an armed robbery involving a minibus near the Carousel Toll Plaza. According to police, the driver had stopped after the toll plaza to relieve himself when four unknown men allegedly emerged from nearby bushes and attacked the occupants.
A third passenger was injured in the attack, while police launched an investigation into murder and armed robbery.
Gauteng traffic authorities subsequently warned motorists about the risks of roadside attacks and vehicle-spiking incidents on major freeways.
N1 Between Carousel and Maubane Has Seen Previous Attacks
The stretch between Carousel Plaza and Maubane has previously featured in reports involving attacks on motorists.
In November 2025, a motorist was reportedly shot dead after criminals allegedly spiked his vehicle on the N1 between Carousel Plaza and the Maubane off-ramp. Police and emergency responders attended the scene, although authorities at the time had not released extensive details about the circumstances.
These previous incidents have contributed to concerns over motorists stopping or being forced to slow down on isolated sections of the highway.
No Official Confirmation of Latest Incident
Despite the circulation of the October 2 footage, details of the latest alleged robbery remain limited.
As of October 4, no official police statement specifically confirming the circumstances shown in Abramjee’s video had been identified.
The footage should therefore be treated as an alert about a reported incident rather than independent confirmation of the identity of the attackers, the exact circumstances of the robbery or whether arrests have been made.

Safety Advice for N1 Motorists
Motorists travelling north from Pretoria towards Limpopo are being encouraged to take precautions, particularly during late-night journeys.
Drivers should avoid stopping on the shoulder of the highway unless absolutely necessary and should use recognised petrol stations or other secure facilities when a break is required.
Keeping doors locked, windows closed and mobile phones charged can also help motorists respond quickly in an emergency.
Anyone who encounters suspicious activity or becomes the victim of a roadside crime should contact the South African Police Service or relevant emergency services.
N1 Crime Concerns Continue
The latest N1 Pretoria robbery warning has once again highlighted concerns about roadside crime on major routes north of Pretoria.
While the October footage has not yet been independently linked to a police-confirmed case, the history of attacks around the Carousel–Maubane corridor shows why motorists are being urged to exercise caution.
Authorities and road-safety organisations continue to encourage motorists to plan their journeys, avoid unnecessary stops in isolated areas and use secure facilities when travelling at night.
