Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged Nigerians to be prepared to make necessary sacrifices to build a country that reflects their collective aspirations.
Oborevwori made the call on Sunday at the 66th Independence Thanksgiving Service held at Living Faith Church, Ibusa Road, Asaba, where he urged Nigerians to uphold the values of sacrifice, courage, patriotism and resilience.

Oborevwori Calls for Sacrifice and Patriotism
Paying tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, Oborevwori acknowledged their sacrifices and contributions to the country’s independence.
He called on Nigerians, both present and future generations, to demonstrate their love for the country by praying for its peace and prosperity.
The governor also stressed the importance of continued prayers for Nigeria, describing the Church’s intercession as critical to the nation’s progress.
“Praying for the nation is a powerful investment that pays huge dividends. I urge us, therefore, not to relent in the place of prayer, because men ought always to pray and not to faint,” he said.
Governor Reminds Public Officials of Their Responsibility
Oborevwori also emphasised the importance of wisdom, integrity and accountability in governance.
He reminded politicians, civil servants and other public officials that their positions were entrusted to them for the benefit of the people.
“At this juncture, I want to remind those of us in public service, politicians and civil servants alike, to make service to the people our number one priority. After all, it is called public service,” he said.
The governor added that elected and appointed officials were serving the people and should therefore exercise their responsibilities in the interest of the wider society.
“Whether you are a civil servant or a politician, whether you are appointed or elected, you are serving the people. Every position you hold is held in trust for the people, not just for you and your immediate family,” he added.
According to Oborevwori, public officials would ultimately give an account of their stewardship to God.
He therefore urged leaders to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, commitment and a strong sense of accountability to the people.

Oborevwori Highlights Nigeria’s Democratic Progress
The Delta governor said Nigeria’s 66 years of independence provided an opportunity for citizens to express gratitude to God while reflecting on the country’s progress.
He particularly highlighted the continuity of democratic governance, noting that Nigeria had recorded 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
“On May 29 this year, we celebrated 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. That is something to celebrate and thank God for. Yes, there have been bumps and twists along the way, but overall, we are making steady progress, and the future remains promising and exciting,” Oborevwori said.
Governor Calls for Prayers for Nigeria
Oborevwori said the Church had an important role to play in promoting peace and stability through continued prayers for the country.
He cited the biblical injunction in Jeremiah 29:7, which calls on believers to seek the peace of the city and pray for it.
The governor said the peace and security enjoyed by individuals were closely connected to the peace of the country.
He attributed the relative peace in Delta State to the contributions of traditional rulers, Presidents-General, community leaders and other stakeholders, alongside what he described as the wisdom granted by God.
Pastor Johns Urges Nigerians to Embrace Nation-Building
Earlier, the Presiding Pastor of Living Faith Church, Ibusa Road Branch, Asaba, Pastor Samuel Johns, urged Nigerians to remain committed to the development of the country.
Johns said nation-building required faith, patriotism and collective responsibility, while expressing optimism that Nigeria was experiencing an awakening that could unlock its potential.
He identified civic responsibility, sacrifice, meaningful contribution, love for the nation and positive impact on communities as important responsibilities of citizens.
According to him, no nation achieves greatness by accident, stressing the need for citizens to contribute positively to their communities and the country.
Pastor Prays for Wisdom for Nigerian Leaders
Using Governor Oborevwori as a point of contact, Johns prayed for wisdom and divine guidance for leaders at all levels.
He urged leaders to manage public resources responsibly and ensure that governance remained focused on the common good.
Dignitaries Attend Independence Thanksgiving Service
The thanksgiving service was attended by the Governor’s wife, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori; President of the Delta State Customary Court, Justice Catherine Ojugbana-Oritsedere; Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, and other members of the Assembly.
Also present were Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Delta State, Elder Moses Iduh; senior government officials, traditional rulers and other dignitaries.
The service provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on Nigeria’s independence, pray for the country and renew calls for patriotism, responsible leadership and collective contribution to national development.
