A newly acquired Olympic-standard boxing ring provided the stage for its first competitive bouts on Wednesday as boxing events got underway at the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.

The ring, procured by the Akwa Ibom State Government, hosted its first contest between Peter of Eket and Sylvester of Ibiono Ibom.
Sylvester won the opening bout, recording the first victory on the newly acquired ring as boxers from the state’s 31 local government areas competed for honours at the festival.
The competitive use of the facility marks another step in Akwa Ibom’s investment in sporting infrastructure and equipment aimed at improving training and competition opportunities for athletes.
The customised ring was unveiled on April 10 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo during a ceremony organised by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports.
It was acquired alongside other sporting equipment as part of efforts by the ministry to strengthen athletes’ preparation and enhance the state’s capacity to host sporting competitions.
Spectators Welcome New Facility
The facility attracted attention from athletes, officials and spectators at the festival venue, with some attendees expressing appreciation for the investment in sports infrastructure.
One of the spectators, Eno James, commended Governor Umo Eno for providing modern equipment for athletes.
“This is something we should be proud of as Akwa Ibom people. The Governor has shown that he wants our athletes to have the right equipment to train and compete. Seeing this new ring being used today is a clear sign that the investment is beginning to have an impact,” James said.
For 16-year-old Mfoniso Jeremiah from Udung Uko, seeing the facility in person was an experience he found memorable.
“It was a delight for me to see the ring and even step on it. I have watched boxing on television, but seeing a standard ring like this physically was exciting for me. I am happy that Akwa Ibom now has equipment like this,” he said.
Supporters from different parts of the state also expressed excitement as the ring hosted its first competitive contests, with many welcoming the availability of modern equipment for local athletes.

Boxing Team’s Recent Medal Haul
