Nigeria set to host TotalEnergies Confederation Cup final

Nigeria will on May 20, 2022, host the final of the 2021/22 TotalEnergies Confederation Cup at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

CAF in a statement on its official website announced that it has awarded the right to Nigeria to host the finals with the home of Nigeria Premier League club, Akwa United pinpointed as the venue for the cracker.

The continental football governing body in last year’s edition chose Benin Republic with Cotonou as the designated venue for the match which Moroccan club, Raja Club Athletic won.

According to CAF which is yet to fix the kick-off time for the match slated for next week, the second leg for the semi-finals among four African clubs, will be played this week Sunday, 15 May, 2022.

CAF statement reading part: “CAF has today announced that Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria will host the 2021/22 Total Energies Confederation Cup final on Friday, 20 May 2022.

“CAF will confirm the kick-off time in due course.

“This is the first intercontinental major cup final to be hosted in Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State – the home of Nigeria’s Premier League side Akwa United.

“Last year (2021), the TotalEnergies Confederation Cup was hosted in Cotonou, Benin where Morocco’s Raja Club Athletic beat Algerian side, JS Kabylie 2-1,” the statement read.

Four teams battling to qualify for the grand finale in Uyo, include DR Congo’s TP Mazembe who narrowly secured a 1-0 victory over RS Berkane of Morocco, and Orlando Pirates that edged Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli to a 2-0 win in the first leg of the semi-finals.
