Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said he does not concern himself with how much his wife spends on clothes, shoes, bags or other personal items, provided her lifestyle is not funded with public money.

Key Highlights

  • Peter Obi says his wife is free to spend her own income as she wishes.
  • Obi says he does not monitor his wife’s personal purchases.
  • He insists public funds must not finance his family’s lifestyle.
  • Obi says his wife has her own business and earns her income.
  • He says personal spending should reflect an individual’s means.
  • Obi also explains why he does not personally celebrate birthdays.

Obi made the remarks while responding to arguments that his wife’s dressing and expensive accessories could contradict his public image as a financially prudent politician.

The former governor said his wife has her own business and earns her own income, stressing that she is free to spend her money as she wishes.

“I don’t know how my wife dresses or the bag or shoes she wears. I can even say now she’s actually a bit more less sophisticated. She used to be far more sophisticated before I became governor,” Obi said.

He explained that his major concern, particularly while serving in public office, was to ensure that public funds were not used to finance his family’s lifestyle.

“And if she earns money and wants to buy an expensive watch, that’s her own. It’s not my business,” he said.

According to Obi, individuals should be allowed to live according to their means as long as their personal choices do not involve the misuse of public resources.

“We’re managing public money. As long as the life she lives does not in any way, bills are not paid from public money, and she’s happy with it, it doesn’t conflict my interest,” he said.

“That’s what I say to people. As long as what you do suits you and doesn’t conflict my interest and it’s not paid by public money, you can do it.”

Peter Obi Speaks On Birthday Celebrations

Obi also addressed questions about birthday celebrations, saying he personally does not celebrate his birthday but does not object to other people celebrating theirs.

“I don’t celebrate birthdays. I’m not into celebration but I don’t stop anybody from celebrating,” he said.

He added that he would attend a birthday celebration organised by others as long as it did not conflict with his interests and he was not responsible for the bill.

“As long as it suits them, it doesn’t conflict my interests, and I’m not paying the bill, I will even attend the party,” Obi said.
