France national team coach Zinedine Zidane has offered a strong endorsement of Lionel Messi’s 2026 Ballon d’Or campaign, declaring that he would vote for the Argentine superstar “100 times” if given the opportunity.
The former France international and Real Madrid manager praised Messi’s remarkable longevity, particularly his ability to remain among the world’s elite at the age of 39.
“I would vote for Messi 100 times,” Zidane said, according to reports cited by Marca.
“I think people really don’t understand how incredible it is to still be among the best players in the world at 39 years old.”
Zidane also believes Messi has a genuine chance of claiming the prestigious individual award for a record-extending ninth time.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Messi won the award,” he added.
The French football legend was even more emphatic when asked about the long-standing debate over the greatest footballer of all time.
Zidane made it clear that, in his view, Messi stands above the competition.
“If anyone still has doubts about the GOAT debate, honestly, that person does not belong in football society,” he reportedly said.
The endorsement is particularly significant given Zidane’s close association with Real Madrid and his successful managerial relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s long-time rival.
Under Zidane, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018.
Messi’s 2026 nomination comes after another productive period with Inter Miami and Argentina.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner registered 45 goals and 30 assists in 49 appearances for club and country, while also playing a prominent role in Argentina’s run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

During the tournament, Messi reportedly scored eight goals and supplied four assists.
His latest nomination represents a return to the Ballon d’Or shortlist after he was absent from the final 30 in both 2024 and 2025.
Messi faces strong competition this year, with the shortlist also featuring the likes of Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Erling Haaland and Michael Olise.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner is scheduled to be announced in London on October 26.
At 39, Messi will now attempt to add another chapter to his extraordinary individual honours record.
