The governorship candidate of the Accord Party in Taraba State, Prof. Jerome Nyameh has asserted that the state’s budgetary priorities don’t reflect the development needs of the people.

Key Highlights:

  • Jerome Nyameh criticises Taraba’s budget priorities.
  • He wants greater transparency in government spending.
  • He called for review of the 2025–2026 budgets.
  • He demanded measurable results in key sectors.
  • He says governance should focus on actual development.

Prof. Nyameh in a statement, said he has examined the state’s allocation of resources, particularly the relationship between capital and recurrent expenditure, expressing concern over the extent to which approved budgets translate into tangible development.

He argued that a budget should not be regarded merely as a collection of figures, but as a reflection of government’s priorities, policy direction and development objectives.

According to him, assessing the performance of government requires going beyond approved budget figures to determine actual revenue generated, expenditure incurred and projects delivered.

He called for a comprehensive review of the total budgets approved for 2025 and 2026, including allocations to various sectors, actual revenues accruing to government coffers, Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations, internally generated revenue, grants and other legitimate revenue sources.

The Accord Party candidate also demanded transparency in the utilisation of funds obtained through borrowing, when such funds were released and how they were utilised.

Prof. Nyameh said the public should also know how much was spent on capital projects compared with recurrent expenditure, including personnel and overhead costs, while the percentage of each sector’s budget actually implemented should be made public.

“Most importantly, we must compare budget allocations with actual inflows and actual expenditure,” he said.

He questioned the actual amount spent on critical sectors, including roads, education, healthcare, agriculture, water, security and other infrastructure, particularly where substantial funds had been budgeted.

The candidate stressed the need for measurable key performance indicators to assess government performance across sectors.

In education, he said the government should account for classrooms constructed, schools renovated, teachers recruited or trained and improvements recorded in learning outcomes.

Similarly, he said citizens should know the number of primary healthcare centres equipped, hospitals upgraded and health workers employed.

On agriculture, roads and infrastructure, water supply, youth empowerment and employment, Prof. Nyameh said government should provide measurable evidence of its achievements.

He said this should include the number of farmers supported, hectares cultivated, kilometres of roads constructed or rehabilitated, communities provided with functional water systems and sustainable jobs created for young people.

According to him, such an approach would shift governance from political promises to measurable results.
