The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has begun an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.

The union announced the decision on Monday, September 7, 2026, following a congress meeting where members resolved to withdraw their academic and administrative services until the outstanding salary is fully paid.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of the ASUU-UNIZIK chapter, Innocent Nnubia, and the Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said its action conforms to the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on the non-payment of salaries.
According to the union, the NEC resolution empowers branches to withdraw their services when members’ salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month.
“Today is September 7, 2026, and the university has not paid the full salary for August to our members,” the statement said.
The lecturers said the situation had occurred more than three times, describing the repeated delay in salary payments as an “ugly and frustrating experience.”
The union stressed that the incomplete payment of the August salary was the sole reason for the industrial action.

It called on the university authorities to urgently intervene by ensuring that all outstanding portions of the August salary are paid.
ASUU also urged the authorities to put measures in place to prevent similar salary payment problems from recurring.
The union directed all its members to stop providing academic and administrative services, declaring that “the withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members.”
When contacted, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the university, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the matter.
