Nigeriau2019s Falconets suffered a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Womenu2019s World Cup campaign on Monday, losing 2-0 to former champions Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland.

Key Highlights

  • Spainu2019s Marisa Garcia opened the scoring in the 13th minute, beating Falconets goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.
  • Nigeria created chances after the opener but could not convert before half-time.
  • The Falconets pushed forward after the break, but Spainu2019s goalkeeper Lopez made key saves.
  • Alba Cerrato doubled Spainu2019s lead in the 72nd minute on the counter-attack.
  • Nigeria now need a positive result against China on Thursday to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Spain, winners of the competition in 2022, made their early dominance count when Garcia calmly beat Uzoma to put her side ahead.

The early goal forced the Falconets to chase the game, but Coach Moses Adukuu2019s side gradually settled and created opportunities of their own. However, Nigeria were unable to convert their chances as Spain went into the interval with their narrow advantage intact.

Second-Half Pressure

The Falconets returned from the break with greater intensity and enjoyed spells of possession as they searched for an equaliser. Nigeria continued to push forward and tested the Spanish defence on several occasions, but Spainu2019s goalkeeper, Lopez, produced important saves to prevent the African side from drawing level.

With Nigeria committing more players forward, Spain found space to strike on the counter-attack. Alba Cerrato took advantage in the 72nd minute, beating Uzoma to make it 2-0 and put Spain firmly in control.

The Falconets continued to fight until the final whistle but could not find a way past the organised Spanish defence.
