OPay Digital Services has debunked a viral social media message claiming that the fintech company would suspend its operations from September 1, 2026, and advised customers to ignore the publication.
The false message, which circulated widely online over the weekend, purportedly urged OPay customers to withdraw or transfer their funds ahead of an alleged prolonged shutdown.
Reacting to the claim, OPay said the publication was fabricated and assured customers that its services remain fully operational.
In a statement shared through its verified social media platforms, the company described the message as false and urged users to verify information about its operations through official channels.
“This is FALSE! OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company stated.
OPay also advised customers to examine the viral message carefully, saying several inconsistencies could help identify it as unauthenticated.
The fintech urged users to avoid sharing unverified information and rely on its verified platforms for announcements concerning its services.
“Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company added.
The company’s Vice President, Public and Government Affairs, Maxwell Loko, separately dismissed the publication, describing it as false, malicious and misleading.
Loko warned customers against taking financial decisions based on the fabricated message, particularly withdrawing funds because of the shutdown claim.
“This post is false, malicious and misleading. OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information,” he said.
He urged members of the public to disregard the message and obtain information about OPay’s operations only from its authenticated communication channels.
“We urge the public to disregard this post and rely only on OPay’s verified communication channels for official information,” Loko added.
The OPay executive further warned that deliberately circulating false information capable of causing panic or damaging confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.

“The deliberate spread of false information designed to cause panic or undermine confidence in a financial institution is a serious matter and may have legal consequences,” he said.
The incident highlights the potential impact of fabricated online publications on financial institutions, where unverified claims can quickly create unnecessary anxiety among customers.
OPay has therefore advised users to exercise caution when encountering messages about its services, particularly those requesting customers to move or withdraw money.
The company maintained that there is no planned shutdown of its operations from September 1, 2026, and encouraged customers to disregard the viral claim.
