Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle secured his first Premier League victory after Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored in a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The victory lifted Newcastle to fourth place in the Premier League table, while Tottenham remained rooted to the bottom after failing to score in their opening league matches of the season.
After a goalless first half, Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute to give the visitors the lead.
New signing Nico Gonzalez, making his Newcastle debut following his £52 million move from Manchester City, started the move with an impressive cross-field pass to Amar Dedic.
Dedic headed the ball into Elanga’s path, and the Swedish forward created space before firing a shot that went in off the post.
Elanga had also scored in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool in their previous Premier League outing.
The Magpies doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Wissa acrobatically hooked the ball into the net after Nick Woltemade headed a corner into his path.
The goal marked Wissa’s first Premier League strike of 2026 and capped an encouraging afternoon for Jaissle’s side.
Tottenham had several opportunities to take control of the contest, with Omar Marmoush, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, among those guilty of missing chances.
Marmoush fired wide from close range in the first half and later failed to convert other promising opportunities as Spurs struggled to find a breakthrough.
Pedro Porro also came close, while substitute Dominic Solanke saw a late effort cleared off the line by Lewis Hall.
Former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali endured a difficult afternoon against his old club following his £100 million summer move to Tottenham.
Tonali was booed repeatedly by the travelling Newcastle supporters and was substituted with the Magpies holding a two-goal advantage.
For Tottenham, the defeat added to growing concerns after another disappointing display. Despite spending heavily during the summer transfer window, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have now suffered another league setback and remain without a Premier League goal this season.

Newcastle, meanwhile, continued to show encouraging signs under Jaissle, who took over following Eddie Howe’s departure in July.
The Magpies had already drawn 2-2 with Liverpool and defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the Carabao Cup, and their victory in London provided further confidence for the new manager.
“It is a good start — we are really, really proud,” Jaissle said after the match.
Tottenham’s struggles at home also continued, with the club now having won just three of their last 23 home Premier League matches.
While Spurs face renewed pressure to turn their season around, Newcastle will take confidence from an impressive away victory as Jaissle’s reign continues to gather momentum.
