Rivers United thrashed MFM 5-0 to record an emphatic victory on matchday 27 on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table.
The home team, being trailed by Plateau United, have extended the gap that existed between them to 7points after the Jos-based team fell to a
2-1 defeat to Nasarawa United.
The Pride of Rivers, whose hunger for the NPFL trophy has grown uncontrollably, wasted no time in opening the goal chart in the 17 minutes of play as Eso Nelson Okwa scored a rebound after Folami Abayomi had denied Ishaq Rafiu’s long-range effort.
Chijioke Akuneto extended the goal margin at the tail end of the first half to hand the home team a comfortable lead into the second half.
Shocking as it may seem, the highly charged Rivers United wasted no time after the sound of the referee’s whistle to triple the score a minute after the second half’s kickoff with Chijioke Akuneto reeling the damage to record his brace.
The deflated MFM, who rock the bottom of the NPFL table, were unable to retaliate or stage a resurgence against the league leaders as there was
a high distinction of class on the field of play.
Despite having a three goals lead against a side struggling to avoid being relegated to a lower division, the unremorseful George Akpabio compounded their woes 6 minutes before additional time to make it 4 unreplied nil.
