The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday in observance of Eid ul Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on Friday in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and around the world as they prepare to mark the annual religious occasion.

The minister urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, peaceful coexistence and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He added that the values represented by the occasion were important to Nigeria at a time when the country continued to face social and economic challenges.

According to the minister, building and sustaining national unity requires the collective efforts of all Nigerians.

He further assured citizens that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property and supporting efforts to maintain peace across the country.

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a public holiday by institutions and workers covered by federal public holiday arrangements.
