The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored three previously suppressed state House of Assembly constituencies in Delta State, paving the way for fresh party primaries and elections in the affected areas.

The commission also restored one constituency in Kogi State, following judgments of the courts directing the restoration of the additional constituencies.

The development was contained in a press release signed by Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, and dated August 14, 2026.

The three restored constituencies in Delta State are Abraka, Isoko North II and Ughelli South II, while Yagba West II State Constituency was restored in Kogi State.

With the restoration, political parties seeking to field candidates for the affected constituencies are expected to conduct fresh primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC has fixed August 21 to 25, 2026 for the conduct of party primaries for the four restored constituencies.

The commission said the period coincides with the scheduled primaries for bye-elections to fill vacancies in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies of Bauchi State, Udu State Constituency of Delta State and Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State.

According to the electoral body, elections into the restored constituencies will hold on September 19, 2026.

The restoration of the constituencies is expected to have significant political implications in Delta State, particularly as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC said all other timelines and activities contained in its already published revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election would apply to the restored constituencies.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all other timelines and activities contained in the already published revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election shall apply to the restored constituencies,” the commission stated.

The electoral umpire further directed political parties to submit notices of their respective primaries to the commission before their scheduled dates.

The restoration follows judicial pronouncements directing INEC to reinstate the constituencies, bringing to four the number of previously suppressed state House of Assembly constituencies restored in Delta and Kogi States.

The development is particularly noteworthy in Delta State, where the affected constituencies cut across three politically significant areas of the state.

INEC, however, assured stakeholders that it remained committed to conducting credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes.

The commission urged political parties and other stakeholders to comply with the approved electoral timetable and submit the required notices ahead of the primaries.
