South Africa has launched its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, designed to make travel faster and strengthen immigration controls, but Nigerian travellers are excluded from the initial rollout.

President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched the system on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Key Highlights:

  • China, India, Indonesia and Mexico are the first four countries covered by the ETA.
  • Nigerian travellers remain subject to the existing South African visa process.
  • The system allows eligible travellers to submit information digitally before travelling.
  • South Africa says the platform will improve pre-screening, border management and fraud detection.
  • Authorities plan to expand the system to additional countries and visa categories.

The ETA enables South African authorities to receive travellers’ information before arrival and conduct pre-screening. Biometric and facial-recognition technology may also be used at border points to verify travellers.

Ramaphosa described the initiative as a major reform of the country’s immigration system, saying it would make travel more predictable while supporting tourism, trade and investment.

The exclusion of Nigeria is significant given the strong travel, commercial and cultural links between the two countries. Nigerian travellers should therefore not assume that the new digital system allows them to apply for an ETA.

South African authorities have indicated that the platform will eventually be expanded to more countries and visa categories. The timing of Nigeria’s inclusion, however, has not been specified.

For now, Nigerians planning to travel to South Africa will continue to use the applicable existing visa channels.
