Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has declared that his administration will not tolerate indiscipline by government officials, stressing that anyone who commits an offence must face the law irrespective of his position in government.

Key Highlights

  • Reference to suspended commissioner: The governor cited the recent suspension and prosecution of Works Commissioner Reuben Izeze following an alleged assault at an APC Delta Central meeting.
  • Security collaboration: Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to maintain peace in Delta State.
  • Support for security agencies: He highlighted government investments in security infrastructure and logistics, including accommodation at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor and support for the 63 Brigade.
  • New GOC assumes command: Major General Everest Okoro, the newly appointed GOC of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, visited the Delta State Government House as part of his familiarisation tour.

The governor’s remarks is coming against the backdrop of the recent suspension of the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, following allegations of assault arising from an incident at an APC Delta Central meeting.

According to Governor Oborevwori, government officials are not above the law, insisting that being a government employee or part of the political system does not shield anyone from facing the consequences of an alleged offence.

“One thing I don’t take in Delta State is indiscipline. Whether you are a government employee or part of the system, if you commit an offence, you must face the consequences,” the governor said.

He recalled that following the allegation involving one of his commissioners, the state government directed the police to investigate the matter, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of the official.

Governor Oborevwori used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to working with security agencies, saying the relative peace enjoyed in the state is largely attributable to sustained cooperation between the government and the security architecture.

The governor congratulated Major General Okoro on his appointment as GOC 6 Division, describing the formation as strategically important to maintaining peace and security in the Niger Delta.

He assured the army chief of the continued support and cooperation of the state government, particularly in strengthening security operations across the state.

He said his administration has provided infrastructure and logistics to support security agencies, including the construction of one-unit flats at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor and sustained logistical support to the 63 Brigade.

The governor also stressed the relationship between security and economic development, noting that the stability of the Niger Delta remained critical to investment, business activities and the national economy.

He urged the new GOC to remain proactive and decisive in dealing with criminal elements and assured him that the state government would continue to collaborate with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

Earlier, Major General Okoro said his visit is part of his familiarisation tour of formations and units under his command following his assumption of duty.

He commended Governor Oborevwori for what he described as purposeful leadership and strong support for the state’s security architecture, particularly in infrastructure, welfare and economic development.

Okoro noted that the oil and gas infrastructure in the state, its waterways and other critical national assets made the state strategically important to Nigeria’s economic and energy security.

He said protecting critical national assets and ensuring security across the division’s area of responsibility would remain among his priorities, adding that credible intelligence, realistic training and effective coordination among security agencies were essential to confronting emerging threats.
