Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo made impressive opening statements as the CAVB Beach Volleyball Youth Development Cup Saly 2026 got underway in Senegal, with both nations recording two wins on an action-packed opening day.
The U-18 competition delivered a mix of dominant displays, thrilling three-set battles and encouraging performances from young beach volleyball players representing countries from across Africa.
Nigeria produced one of the strongest performances of the opening day in the women’s category, cruising to two emphatic victories.
The Nigerian pair began their campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over The Gambia, winning 21-9, 21-13.
They followed it up with an even more dominant display against Cape Verde, securing another straight-sets victory, 21-7, 21-3.
The results put Nigeria among the early teams to watch as the women’s competition enters its next phase.
Hosts Senegal also made their presence felt, with Senegal B edging Egypt 2-1 (22-20, 21-17, 15-10) in a thrilling contest.

Senegal then defeated Mozambique 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-13) in another closely fought encounter.
Egypt bounced back later in the day, coming from behind to defeat Senegal 2-1. After losing the opening set 14-21, Egypt responded strongly to take the next two sets 21-14, 15-9.
Tunisia also enjoyed a winning start, defeating Cape Verde 2-0 (21-14, 21-10).
The Democratic Republic of Congo matched Nigeria’s winning start in the men’s competition, securing two straight-set victories.
DR Congo opened with a 2-0 victory over Morocco, winning 21-14, 21-19, before defeating Ghana 2-0 (21-19, 21-15).
Senegal also enjoyed a productive day on home soil.
The hosts defeated Ghana 2-0 (21-18, 21-13), with Ghana conceding on medical grounds, before recording another straight-set victory over Namibia, 21-13, 21-14.
Senegal A produced another impressive performance against South Africa, winning 2-0 (21-15, 22-20), with the second set providing one of the day’s closest finishes.
Sierra Leone also began their campaign on a positive note, defeating South Africa 2-0 (21-14, 21-11).
The opening day highlighted the growing strength and competitiveness of youth beach volleyball across Africa, with several teams already showing the quality and determination required to challenge for honours.
