The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected reports that it endorsed Governor Nasir Idris of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election.

Key Highlights

  • Kebbi PDP rejects endorsement of Governor Nasir Idris.
  • Party says it remains united ahead of 2027.
  • PDP stakeholders had declared support for Idris.
  • Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi led the endorsement.
  • PDP chairman says endorsement was not official.

The party said it remains united and committed to its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The clarification followed a declaration by a group of PDP stakeholders and supporters in Birnin Kebbi who announced their support for Governor Idris’ re-election bid.

The group, led by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd.), said its decision was based on what it described as the governor’s achievements and commitment to the development of the state.

However, in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, PDP Kebbi State Chairman, Usman Suru, said the endorsement did not represent the official position of the party.

“The Kebbi State PDP denies and rejects the rumour that it is supporting the APC and the APC governorship candidate in Kebbi State in the upcoming 2027 election,” Suru said.

He described the party as “one and united”, stressing that the PDP remained committed to its candidates and political platform.

Suru urged party members and supporters to disregard reports suggesting that the PDP had abandoned its platform or adopted the APC candidate.

“I advise PDP members to focus on uniting the people and disregard all false and baseless rumours being spread by those who want to cause confusion. Such people have no control over the PDP in Kebbi State,” he said.

The chairman said the party had fielded candidates for the state House of Assembly across the 21 local government areas, the House of Representatives in the eight federal constituencies and the Senate across the three senatorial districts.

He added that the PDP also had a governorship candidate, maintaining that the party remained an independent and established political organisation in the state.

But speaking at the gathering where the support for Governor Idris was announced, Bamaiyi said the group had resolved to back the governor based on his administration’s performance.

“For the 2027 elections, we are now fully committed to the victory of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu,” Bamaiyi said.

He, however, clarified that the group would remain within the PDP, suggesting that the endorsement was a decision by the participating stakeholders and not an official resolution of the state chapter.

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Buhari Bala, who also spoke at the gathering, said the decision followed the group’s assessment of Idris’ leadership and performance.

“We cannot remain passive in the face of what we consider patriotic and selfless leadership,” Bala said.

The development comes amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi, with some PDP stakeholders backing the incumbent governor while the party’s state leadership insists it has neither endorsed Idris nor abandoned its own candidate.
