The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline has reached Abuja, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) targeting phased commissioning of the major gas infrastructure project later this year.

NNPC’s Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, disclosed this at the 2026 Energy Business Development Forum on the AKK Gas Pipeline Project held at the Government House in Minna, Niger State.

AKK Gas Pipeline reaches Abuja, marking a major milestone in the project.

NNPC plans to commission the pipeline in phases later in 2026.

The Niger State section is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

The 614km pipeline will transport natural gas from Ajaokuta to Kano.

Niger State has designated an Industrial Development Park along the AKK corridor.

The project is expected to support domestic gas utilisation and attract investment in gas-based industries.

According to a post on its social media handles, NNPC quoted Ogunleye as saying the pipeline had reached Abuja and would be commissioned in phases later in the year, while the Niger State section was expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

“The pipeline has reached Abuja and will be commissioned in phases later in the year, with the Niger State section due for completion before year-end,” Ogunleye said.

The development marks a significant milestone in the construction of the AKK Gas Pipeline, which is expected to support domestic gas utilisation and encourage investment in gas-based industries along its corridor.

AKK Gas Pipeline To Transport Gas From Ajaokuta To Kano

The AKK Gas Pipeline is a 40-inch, 614-kilometre linear pipeline system running from Ajaokuta in Kogi State to Kano.

The project includes intermediate and terminal gas facilities, as well as other related infrastructure required to transport natural gas to off-takers.

The pipeline is expected to play a significant role in expanding Nigeria’s domestic gas market and supporting industries that depend on reliable gas supply.

AKK Pipeline Crossed River Niger

Last year, NNPC announced that the AKK Gas Pipeline had successfully crossed the River Niger, raising expectations that the project would be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bayo Ojulari, announced the milestone in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the 24th Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition.

Ojulari said the feat was achieved through effective and innovative contract re-engineering and collaboration among industry stakeholders.

The latest update indicates that work on the project has progressed further, with the pipeline now reaching Abuja and phased commissioning expected later in 2026.

Niger Sets Aside Industrial Park Along AKK Corridor

The forum in Minna was organised to showcase investment opportunities and the economic prospects associated with the AKK Gas Pipeline Project.

The event was themed, “Accelerating Domestic Gas Utilisation and Driving the Compressed Natural Gas Revolution along the AKK Corridor.”

Also speaking at the forum, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, disclosed that the state government had designated an Industrial Development Park within the 1,000-square-kilometre AKK corridor in the state.

According to Bago, the industrial park will create opportunities for investment in agro-allied industries, petrochemicals and fertilizer production.

“The State Government has designated an Industrial Development Park within the 1,000-square-kilometre AKK corridor in the state, opening the route to agro-allied, petrochemical and fertiliser investment opportunities,” Bago said.

The development is expected to strengthen the investment potential of the AKK corridor by linking gas infrastructure with industrial and manufacturing activities in Niger State.

With the pipeline advancing towards phased commissioning, stakeholders expect the AKK project to contribute to Nigeria’s gas utilisation strategy, industrial development and broader energy security.
