Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven is close to signing a new five-year contract with the Premier League club after being convinced by the team’s new direction under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

However, De Zerbi’s appointment in March is understood to have played a decisive role in persuading the 25-year-old to commit his long-term future to Tottenham.

Van de Ven recently praised the changes taking place at the club, saying the renewed ambition shown by the hierarchy had given players fresh confidence ahead of the new campaign.

“It’s really good that you can see the club has made some changes. You can see the club has a new ambition, and that’s really important for players who have been here for a long time,” he said.

The defender admitted last season was disappointing, describing it as “unacceptable” after Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation by finishing 17th in the Premier League for a second consecutive season.

Spurs endured a turbulent campaign marked by three managerial changes before eventually securing survival on the final day of the 2025-26 season.

Van de Ven believes De Zerbi’s attacking philosophy will transform the team’s style of play and restore confidence within the squad.

“It’s going to be different compared to the manager we had last season. It will also be more enjoyable for people to watch because we’ll be playing offensive football. It is something we needed because everybody was a little bit down,” he added.

The new long-term contract for Van de Ven would represent another positive step in Tottenham’s rebuilding process as the club seeks to move on from recent struggles and re-establish itself as a competitive force in the Premier League.
