Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt on Wednesday night, keeping their title hopes alive after a mixed start to the tournament.

Heading into the Group B encounter at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, the nine-time African champions needed victory after losing their opening match to Malawi before reviving their campaign with a win over Zambia.

Captain Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria the breakthrough in the 21st minute, calmly converting a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a handball by an Egyptian defender.

The Falcons doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time when substitute Gift Monday fired home her first goal of the tournament. However, Egypt reduced the deficit moments later as Nadine Ghazi converted a penalty after Michelle Alozie was adjudged to have fouled an opponent following another VAR intervention, leaving the score at 2-1 at halftime.

Nigeria returned strongly after the break and restored their two-goal cushion in the 57th minute when substitute Uchenna Kanu capitalised on a defensive lapse to make it 3-1.

The Super Falcons continued to dominate and earned another penalty after a VAR review. Christy Ucheibe stepped up in the 81st minute and confidently converted to extend the lead to 4-1.

Egypt responded through Ghazi, who grabbed her second goal of the match in the 84th minute, but Nigeria quickly regained control.

Rashidat Ajibade converted yet another penalty in stoppage time to make it 5-2 before Joy Omewa completed the rout in the closing moments, finishing from Ajibade’s assist to seal a comprehensive 6-2 victory.

The result sends Nigeria into the quarter-finals, where the Super Falcons will continue their quest for a record-extending WAFCON title after recovering from their opening defeat.
