Afrobeats superstar Davido has appealed to residents of Osun State to shun violence, intimidation and provocation as the state prepares for its forthcoming governorship election.

Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the appeal during a youth campaign mobilisation event in support of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, in Osun State.

The singer, who shared highlights of the event on his Instagram page on Wednesday, described the incumbent governor as one of the best leaders the state has had while expressing confidence that he would secure another term.

Speaking to supporters, Davido said he was addressing the people not only as an entertainer but also as a representative of the younger generation.

“I speak to you today, not just as Davido, but as one of your own, as a voice for our people. I understand the tension and emotion surrounding this election, but I urge everyone to remain calm,” he said.

The singer further expressed confidence in his uncle’s political prospects, declaring that the Adeleke camp had previously won elections in the state and would seek another victory.

“We’ve won this thing twice before. No shaking. We’ve won it twice before and we’re going to win it again for the third time, by the grace of God,” Davido said.

However, he stressed that political differences should not result in violence or destruction.

“Let us reject violence. I’ll say it again. Let us reject violence, intimidation, provocation and, most importantly, destruction,” he said.

Davido urged eligible voters to participate in the election without fear, stressing that their votes should be respected.

“To every person in Osun, come out and exercise your right to vote. Do not be afraid or intimidated. Your vote is your voice and your choice must be respected,” he added.

The singer also appealed to political leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully.

He said he had heard rumours of alleged attempts to interfere with the election or turn Osun into a political battleground, but stressed that he was not presenting the claims as established facts.

“I do not present these claims as facts, but I appeal to you, sir, to use your influence to promote peace and allow the people of Osun choose their candidates freely,” he said.

Davido also referenced his personal connection to Imo State through his wife, Chioma, while making his appeal for peace.

“My wife, Chioma, is from the state, which makes this appeal more sincere. Please, let Osun remain peaceful,” he said.

The singer concluded by urging political actors to accept the outcome of the election and allow democracy to prevail.

“Politics is temporary, but Osun will be here forever. No political victory is worth violence, destruction or the loss of a single life,” Davido said.

His comments come amid heightened political activities ahead of the Osun governorship election, with stakeholders expected to intensify campaigns and mobilisation in the run-up to the poll.

Davido’s message was therefore centred on peaceful participation, voter confidence and respect for the eventual choice of the electorate.
