Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to reject hunger, poverty and economic hardship at the 2027 polls, declaring that the power to determine the outcome of the election ultimately rests with the people, not the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Key Highlights:

  • Peter Obi says Nigerians, not INEC, will determine the credibility of the 2027 election.
  • Urges citizens to reject hunger, poverty and worsening economic hardship.
  • Says over 70 million Nigerians are facing acute hunger.
  • Declares: “Enough is enough” to economic suffering and bad governance.
  • Speaks during the burial of the father of NDC senatorial candidate Linus Okorie in Ebonyi State.

Obi made the remarks on Friday after attending the burial of Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, father of the NDC’s Ebonyi South senatorial candidate, Chief Linus Okorie, at Isiama Primary School in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Paying tribute to the deceased, the former Anambra State governor described his relationship with Linus Okorie as longstanding, noting that they had previously worked together in the Labour Party before joining the NDC.

“We have worked together before in the Labour Party and now we are in the NDC. That shows we have a close relationship. We are here today to pay our last respects to his late father.

“I pray that God Almighty, who gave Papa a long life and has now called him home, will grant him eternal rest and give the family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Obi said.

Turning to the 2027 general election, Obi insisted that the credibility of the polls would depend on Nigerians’ willingness to protect their votes.

“It is not about confidence in INEC. The real question is whether Nigerians have confidence in themselves. If the people insist that their votes must count, then their votes will count,” he stated.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s current condition and decide whether they want a different future.

“Anybody talking about changing Nigeria today is making the ultimate sacrifice because we cannot continue like this. Nigerians must ask themselves what future awaits their children if things continue on this path.”

Obi painted a grim picture of the nation’s economic situation, saying poverty and hunger have become impossible to ignore.

“Every day poverty is increasing. Every day hunger is increasing. You don’t even need reports from the World Bank to know this. You can see it in every village across Nigeria.”

He added that millions of Nigerians are struggling to survive.

“They say more than 70 million Nigerians are facing acute hunger. We cannot continue like this.”

The former governor also dismissed fears that opposition supporters could be intimidated ahead of the election, arguing that Nigerians are already enduring greater hardship.

“Every Nigerian is already being harassed by hunger. People are being harassed by the worsening economic situation. Everyone is affected.”

He concluded with a rallying call to Nigerians:

“It is time for Nigerians to tell those responsible for this suffering that enough is enough.”
