The Ondo State Government has commenced the digital transformation of its public secondary education system with the deployment of digital learning resources to 50 schools and the training of teachers to improve technology-driven teaching and learning.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, disclosed this in Akure during the grand finale of the fourth edition of the Ondo State Digital Quiz Competition for secondary schools.
The annual competition was organised by the state government in partnership with Information and Communication Technology firm, Quickens Computer Limited, as part of efforts to promote digital literacy among students.
Ajibefun said the government had intensified investment in digital education by equipping schools with technology and organising continuous training programmes for teachers to prepare them for the ongoing digitalisation of the state’s education sector.
According to him, ICT teachers in public secondary schools recently completed a week-long intensive training programme conducted in collaboration with the ministry’s technical partners.
He explained that the initiative, which began last year, would continue as part of the state’s long-term strategy to modernise teaching and learning.
“The Ondo State Government is making significant investments in digital education through the training of teachers and students in preparation for the digitalisation of our education system. This training is continuous and will be sustained,” he said.
Ajibefun noted that although the immediate focus is on teachers, the programme is designed to directly benefit students, as trained educators will transfer their newly acquired knowledge and digital skills to learners in their classrooms.
The commissioner also revealed that 50 public secondary schools across the state have already received computer equipment and other digital learning tools through one of the government’s technical partners.
He said the deployment of the equipment would enhance classroom instruction and expose students to practical digital learning experiences.
Speaking on the objective of the Digital Quiz Competition, Ajibefun described it as an initiative aimed at encouraging digital literacy, academic excellence and innovation among secondary school students.
He said the government recognises the growing importance of technology in education and is committed to preparing young people with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

“The world is rapidly becoming technology-driven. We want our students not only to use technology but also to become innovators, creators and future leaders capable of contributing meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Akindele Ige, described the competition as a platform for developing critical thinking, creativity and digital competence among students.
He said the initiative aligns with the state’s broader objective of equipping learners with relevant knowledge and practical skills required for success in the 21st-century economy.
Several secondary schools participated in the competition, including Fiwasaye Girls’ Secondary School, Akure; Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure; Greater Tomorrow Secondary School, Arigidi Akoko, and other public and private schools across Ondo State.
