United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s efforts in combating terrorism and strengthening national security, while reaffirming Washington’s commitment to expanding security cooperation with Nigeria.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, released by the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Trump thanked Tinubu for his earlier correspondence and applauded his administration’s determination to confront terrorism and enhance security across Nigeria, particularly in protecting vulnerable communities.

The US President also reaffirmed America’s commitment to deepening bilateral security cooperation, noting that Nigeria and the United States share a common objective of combating terrorism and promoting stability across West Africa.
Trump highlighted the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as a key framework for expanding military collaboration, intelligence sharing and coordinated counter-terrorism operations between both countries.
He disclosed that American Special Operations Forces have been deployed to support and train personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, providing advanced tactical training, intelligence support and operational expertise aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capabilities.
The Presidency further stated that both countries have intensified their security partnership through a Joint Working Group coordinated by the National Security Advisers of Nigeria and the United States.
According to the statement, the partnership has focused on intelligence exchange, military capacity building and coordinated operations against terrorist groups operating within the region.
One of the notable outcomes of the collaboration, the Presidency said, was the May 16 operation targeting ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region, which reportedly led to the elimination of senior ISIS commander Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his fighters.
The statement also revealed that US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, recently visited Abuja to explore additional areas of cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in security, defence and other strategic sectors.
