First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has announced that the community category of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge closed on July 15, 2026, without receiving any qualifying entries.

Key Highlights;

  • Oluremi Tinubu said no entry qualified for the ₦50 million community category of the Green Nigeria Challenge.
  • She commended the remodelling of the Abuja City Gate as a model environmental project.
  • The First Lady urged communities and states to invest in cleaner, greener environments.
  • The household and state categories remain open until December 20, 2026.
  • The initiative promotes tree planting and environmental restoration across Nigeria.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the first lady said the category was created to encourage local governments, communities, schools, youth groups and non-governmental organisations to transform degraded public spaces—including dumpsites, landfills and abandoned areas—into green parks, gardens and other environmentally friendly spaces.

The category offered a ₦50 million cash prize for the best project, but no entry met the required standard.

Despite the outcome, Tinubu praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, describing the project as an example of the environmental transformation the initiative seeks to promote.

She urged state governments and communities across the country to intensify efforts to create cleaner and greener environments by investing in proper waste management, beautification projects and ensuring drainage channels remain free of refuse to reduce flooding.

The first lady noted that although the community category has ended, the household and state categories of the Green Nigeria Challenge remain open until December 20, 2026.

According to her, the household category is open to participants in the 10 frontline northern states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara, with a ₦20 million prize for outstanding tree-planting initiatives.

The state category, open to all states except Enugu, which has already been recognised as the initiative’s Model Green State, carries a ₦100 million prize for exceptional state-wide tree-planting and environmental restoration efforts.

The Renewed Hope Initiative Green Nigeria Challenge is a nationwide environmental campaign aimed at promoting tree planting, restoring degraded landscapes and encouraging sustainable environmental practices across Nigeria.
