The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Beacon of Education Award by the Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, in recognition of her commitment to educational development and youth empowerment.

The award was presented during the school’s 2026 graduation ceremony held at Nile University, Abuja, where the institution acknowledged the role played by the NUJ FCT Council under Ike’s leadership in supporting its pupils during a national media quiz competition in which the school emerged overall winner.

Presenting the award, the Proprietor and Managing Director of Beautiful Beginning Academy, Mrs. Rosemary Okolie, described Ike as a compassionate leader whose support has positively impacted the lives of many children.

She recalled that when the school qualified for the national competition, the NUJ FCT chairman promptly provided support that boosted the morale of the pupils and contributed to their eventual success.

According to her, Ike’s intervention went beyond encouragement, as she also ensured the students received the welfare and logistical support needed throughout the competition.

“She came in and changed the narrative. There is nothing I can give her that equals what she has done for these children,” Mrs.Okolie said.

The school noted that Ike’s dedication to education and youth development, as well as her commitment to supporting young learners, made her a deserving recipient of the honour.

Receiving the award, an emotional Grace Ike described the recognition as unexpected and a renewed call to service.

She dedicated the award to Ms. Adaeze Okeke, a student with special needs whose story touched her deeply during the graduation ceremony.

“I dedicate this award to Adaeze,” Ike said.

The NUJ FCT chairman pledged to use her professional platform and influence to advocate for children living with special needs and to amplify their voices through journalism.

“I will continue to tell their stories, draw attention to their needs and advocate for greater support and inclusion in society,” she said.

She also commended Adaeze’s family for their dedication and perseverance, noting that their journey serves as an inspiration for greater advocacy, inclusion and equal opportunities for children with special needs.

The presentation of the Beacon of Education Award drew a standing ovation from guests and emerged as one of the highlights of the graduation ceremony, underscoring the role of journalism, philanthropy and community partnerships in advancing inclusive education in Nigeria.
