The Gombe State government has ordered an immediate investigation into the collapse of a section of the cantilevered entrance canopy at the construction site of the new state House of Assembly complex.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, resulted in eight casualties.
Seven construction workers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment, while one worker died.
According to the state Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, five of the injured workers are receiving treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two others are being treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has been briefed on the incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
He also directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at the government’s expense.
The governor further instructed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, in collaboration with relevant emergency, regulatory and technical agencies, to immediately commence established safety and accountability procedures.

As part of the directive, the contractor handling the project and the supervising consultant have been ordered to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours.
This will be followed by a preliminary investigation report and a comprehensive technical report detailing the cause of the collapse, findings and recommendations.
The state government said it would allow the outcome of the investigation to guide all necessary decisions and actions, assuring that appropriate measures would be taken in line with established standards and the findings of the investigation.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to strict compliance with safety, quality and engineering standards in the execution of public infrastructure projects and said further updates would be provided as verified information becomes available.
